No amount of reassurance could take away that anxiety. This kind of reaction is not at all unusual for a trauma victim. Then, a few days after the attack, Seles received a blow of a different nature, but almost as devastating. The Women’s Tennis Association met in Rome to discuss what to do about her ranking. She was the best in women’s tennis, number one in the world. But it was obvious that she wasn’t going to be able to defend that ranking—at least for a while. And two of the big Grand Slam tournaments were coming up—the French Open in late May, followed by the prestigious Wimbledon.
That event would bring her fairy-tale tennis life crashing down around her. 51 A stunned Monica receives emergency treatment after being stabbed in the back at a 1993 tournament in Hamburg, Germany. 5 “TERROR AND PAIN” TODAY, SPECTATORS AT professional tennis matches, whether indoors at New York’s Madison Square Garden or outdoors at England’s Wimbledon, will immediately notice the guards on the courts. They look like ushers, and at times they will play that role. However, they also have another job: each time the tennis players come off the court to sit down during breaks between games, the ushers must stand behind them.
But she also didn’t want to risk permanent injury to her ankle. With some rest time, Seles was ready for her next challenge—the Virginia Slims tournament in Houston, Texas, in late April. After a rather easy swing through the first rounds, she reached the semifinals to face an old opponent, Carrie Cunningham. Seles had played Cunningham twice before, winning once and losing once. But at their last meeting, when Seles was at the academy, Cunningham had trounced her, 6–1, 6–0. Seles still remembered that loss even though it had been two years before.
