He and his wife sent their son to a pricey boarding school, bought a top-of-the-range piano and installed a billiard table in their house. They also employed a number of servants to do their bidding. Unfortunately, Mozart wasn’t thinking of the future - he was spending every penny he earned on this life of luxury. His next accomplishment was to produce two amazing operas - The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni - both of which were incredibly successful. Mozart’s father sadly did not get to witness this success however, as he died in May 1787.

Having heard just two performances of Gregorio Allegri’s Miserere, he wrote the music out from memory - the first time it was written down outside of the Vatican. They had kept the sheet music highly secret and closely guarded! Because of this, the Pope (Clement XIV) made him a knight - he was given the Papal Order of the Golden Spur. When it came to crossing international borders as a boy, Mozart would often ‘oil the diplomatic wheels’ by playing the violin to entertain customs officers! Mozart didn’t need any instruments or paper to compose music - he would often think of intricate compositions whilst on long journeys, and only write it down when he got to his destination.

Historians believe that Mozart could speak more than twelve languages! Mozart generally did not make copies of his music - he wrote ‘final drafts’ directly in ink onto manuscript. Originals which still exist today show no corrections! And Finally... Mozart was obsessed with faeces, and constantly wrote scatological references in his letters. Here is a poem he wrote to his cousin: Well, I wish you good night But first s**t into your bed and make it burst. Sleep soundly, my love Into your mouth your arse you’ll shove.
